All you need to know about slings

A sling is a cable used to hang suspended elements. Generally made of metal, each sling can carry a predefined weight (weight varies depending on the exhibition center).

What are they for?

For example, hanging signs to make your stand visible from afar, or a light bridge to illuminate your stand.

So a sling is used to support a certain weight, but how do you know how many to order and where to place them?

Sufficient slings are required to distribute the weight of the structure evenly without exceeding the maximum weight allowed per sling (varies according to exhibition center).

The number of slings must ensure that the structure is balanced and remains perfectly stable (even in the event of a draught). They should therefore not all be placed on the same side of the structure, but in a uniform position.

The number of slings must be large enough to support the structure, should one of them fail. Public safety is a top priority.

A concrete example:

  • On a linear bridge of less than 3m: 1 sling is normally required at each end, provided the maximum weight supported by the slings is not exceeded.
  • On a linear bridge of 3m or more: a minimum of 3 slings is required, as 1 sling is needed near the ends the ends (+/- 20 cm from the edges) and a central sling.

Back to school 🤓:

Weight of structure / Maximum weight allowed for 1 sling = Number of slings required.

If your neurons are overheated, or if you have the slightest doubt about these technical questions, you can contact our project managers, who are all experts in the event industry, and therefore in the know on these subjects.

Expose tips:

  • It is imperative to consult the architectural regulations, where all the rules of the event are defined, and to check that the stand is in an area eligible for slinging.
  • Don't forget to include the weight of hoists when calculating the weight of their structure (the hoist is the most widely used lifting device).
  • If in doubt, call your project manager 😉
